The Life of Chuck (2024)

It is rare that going into a film blind truly pays off and makes you really feel something. The Life of Chuck is certainly one of those films. Remembering that I had been intrigued by the trailer back in 2024, I sat down to give it a watch. Not recalling anything but a dance sequence, I sat back to let the esteemed director Mike Flanagan take me on a ride. Little did I know that this ride would take me through every emotion possible.

As was already mentioned, I went into the film blind and that is how I am going to leave you, the reader. This is definitely the best way to go in because even the trailer itself leaves you curious as to what this film is actually about. The is no linear plot disclosed and that has definitely been done on purpose because even those who have seen it will struggle to really explain the story without sounding a tad crazy.

I saw a fellow reviewer say, “”Don’t let anyone spoil this film for you”, and that is because this is a rare instance where knowing nothing proves to make the journey that much better. As was previously stated, there is no shortage of emotion throughout. There is true elation, confusion, heartbreak, devastation, and even a tinge of fear sprinkled throughout.

Is the film perfect? No but this is an instance where the imperfections don’t matter because at the heart of the piece is a man and man is imperfect by design. Flanagan has made a film that doesn’t seek to educate or lecture the audience about anything. Instead he has created a piece of art that just asks that you live in the here and now and to appreciate that even the most inconsequential moments of our lives can somehow become the most profound.

For a film that used a famous Hollywood actor for the majority of the marketing and as the face on the poster, it is surprising how little it matters that the title role is played by such a big name such as Tom Hiddleston. Perhaps it was to get people to see it or get the studio to fund it, but surely Mr. Flanagan’s name would have been enough to entice audiences to see it and studio heads to green light it. But no matter why you may sit down to watch it, this film is a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours cozying up to someone you love and taking the ride together.
